AWS Batch: Introduction and Step by Step Guide to Automate an AWS Batch Jobs
AWS Batch is a great service for heavy batch computing workloads. It eliminates the need to set up and maintain complex infrastructure. It also lowers the cost of the environment.
AWS Batch is an extremely efficient service that was introduced by the AWS Team. It allows you to run batch computing workloads in the AWS Cloud. It also allows us to use aws resources more efficiently and effectively, making the AWS Cloud more convenient for our users. Once a job is submitted, the service provides the underlying resources quickly. It reduces compute costs and helps deliver results quickly.
What is batch processing or computing?
It is used to run repetitive, high-volume data jobs quickly. This allows users to process data with all available computing resources and minimize user interaction.
AWS Batch only makes all the resources available to the user when they need them. The job is completed and the resources are released automatically, saving money for the user.
Automating an AWS Batch job
To run a batch process, we must create and run a job. A job can be created from the console and run directly. In most cases, however, users will need to automate this process so that they don’t have to manually create and run batch jobs.
CloudWatch Events or AWS Lambda are the best ways to automate this process. These services can be easily triggered to create and run jobs on the AWS batch.
AWS Batch Components with Simple Steps for Batch Creation
Compute Environment: This is a collection of managed and unmanaged compute resources that can be used to run jobs. Managed to compute environments allow users to specify the desired compute type (Fargate, EC2) at various levels of detail. Users can set up environments that use a specific EC2 instance or any model, such as c5.2xlarge and m5.10xlarge. You can also specify which instance type you want. Users can also specify the minimum, desired, or maximum number of vCPUs in the environment. They can also choose to pay a percentage of the On Demand Instance price and a target set VPC subnets. AWS Batch is efficient in managing, launching, and terminating compute types as required. Users can also manage their computing environment. They are responsible for setting up and scaling instances in the Amazon ECS clusters that AWS Batch creates.
Job Queues – Each batch is submitted to a job queue. This is where the job is stored until it is scheduled onto a computing environment. Users can easily associate multiple compute environments to a single job queue. This allows us to assign priority values to these environments, and even between job queues. You can assign high priority to time-sensitive jobs and low priority to jobs that can run at any time when resources are less expensive.
Job Definitions: This is basically a blueprint that outlines how jobs will be run. To access the underlying resources, you must assign an IAM role to your job. It allows you to specify both CPU and memory requirements. It can control container properties, environment variables, as well as mount points for persistent storage. You can also specify any commands you want to be executed when your job is run.
Create a Job: A job can be created to perform the batch process. Once you submit a job via the AWS console, or any automation licensor, it is done.
